Read the beach as a changing landscape. Start at an official access point and check conditions and rules again on the day you go.
Look and learn
Scan loose beach material for different textures, color and translucence. Wet and dry views can differ. Photograph a candidate with scale, then note whether it was in sand, gravel or cobble.
Leave attached rock and living things in place. An observation is a complete field find even when nothing is taken.
Choose a beach entrance
Oregon State Parks lists Neptune State Scenic Viewpoint as a beach access and agate hunting stop. Its park profile is the starting point for directions and current conditions, not a guarantee of finds or unrestricted collecting.
Check the Ocean Shore rules and FAQ for souvenir quantities and posted exceptions. Check tides and surf with current official forecasts before entering any beach.
Before you go
