What to look for
Study weathered exposures and transported material, then record the host rock, texture and location of each find. A photograph and field notes help later identification.
Prepare for the terrain
Check forecast, water, heat exposure, vehicle condition, communication and travel time. Keep the route within verified public access or landowner permission.
Before you collect
- Choose a specific proposed stop and obtain its coordinates.
- Verify surface ownership and any current claims or restrictions with the managing agency.
- Confirm the current collecting rules and any required permission or permit.
- Check road status and weather immediately before travel.
- Record where each specimen came from without publishing sensitive localities.
