What you will learn

A responsible field plan separates what is known from what still needs checking. Observations can be recorded without removing a specimen.

Words to use

  • permission: authorization for an action
  • condition: current state of a place
  • fallback: another plan

Evidence for this lesson

Imaginary park facts: visitors may observe from a marked path. Rocks and fossils must remain in place. Digging is prohibited. Tomorrow’s weather, path condition and accessibility have not been checked.

Use the supplied record as written; do not invent missing results.

Work through the activity

  1. 5 min · Read the factsSeparate the stated park rules from questions still unanswered. The exercise location is imaginary and is not a recommendation.
  2. 15 min · Choose activitiesPlan three observations along the allowed path. Use drawings or notes instead of collecting, digging or disturbing the ground.
  3. 15 min · Check the gapsList what an adult must verify before a real trip: current rules, weather, accessible route, group needs and supervision. Do not turn an unanswered question into permission.
  4. 10 min · Add a fallbackMake a classroom version using photographs if conditions or permission prevent the outdoor plan. Explain why cancellation can be a good decision.

Check your understanding

The park allows walking but prohibits collecting. Can you take a small pebble?

Grade 4 · Plan a No-Collect Field Day

Learning goal: Create an observation plan that includes site rules, conditions and a fallback.

Expected responses

  1. Observation from the marked path; leaving specimens and ground undisturbed.
  2. Texture, visible layers, cracks or transport clues seen from the path are suitable.
  3. Current conditions, current rules, accessibility, supervision and weather are suitable.
  4. A photograph-based or adult-selected tray activity can meet the observation goal.

Understanding check: No; use a record instead. Walking permission and collecting permission are separate.

Watch for this misconception

Public access does not automatically include collecting permission.

Assess the evidence

Look for the observations, calculation or explanation named in the learning goal. Accept accurate drawings and dictated responses. Use the expected responses to discuss reasoning; a correct guess without explanation is a starting point for another conversation.

Adapt and extend

Read prompts aloud, enlarge print or let a partner record the learner’s explanation. Use Field Planner with a real place only after an adult checks current authoritative information.
