Start with what you can observe.

A photograph is useful context. Hardness, luster, streak and a few careful tests narrow the next question. This worksheet suggests observations; it does not make a definitive identification.

Specimen clues

Color is useful to record, but it rarely identifies a mineral by itself.

Test an inconspicuous spot. Wear eye protection.
Inspect an existing surface; do not break a specimen just for this worksheet.

Do not use chemicals without appropriate supervision and protection. Record the method if you already performed a test.
