Mineral Detective
Learning goal: Compare physical properties and support a working identification with two clues.
Materials: The five online case cards or adult-selected teaching samples; paper and pencils. No scratch tools required.
- 5 minIntroduce a rock versus a mineral; describe before naming.
- 15 minPairs compare all five evidence cards with the reference.
- 5 minEach pair explains two clues for one candidate.
- 5 minExit ticket: explain why color alone is insufficient.

Case A quartz; B calcite; C gypsum; D fluorite; E muscovite mica. Use supplied clues together. Real specimens need additional evidence.
Adapt or extend: Draw or dictate observations for younger learners. Extend by asking which new result would rule out a candidate.

Five Things Underfoot
Learning goal: Separate observations from possible causes and explain one stewardship decision.
Materials: Approved outdoor area or photo tray; pencils, clipboard, water and weather-appropriate supplies.
- 10 minReview the search boundary, conditions and leave-in-place rules.
- 20–50 minLook for texture, crystals or shine, weathering, layers and transport clues.
- 10–20 minWrite notes, make a simple map and discuss alternative explanations.
- 5–10 minReview a leave-it decision and any badge criteria.
Facilitator notes and answer guidance
Answers depend on location. A clear “not found” note earns observation credit. A transport badge needs a documented clue, not just a checked box.
Adapt or extend: Use a seated observation station, a window view or photographs. Dictation, drawing and paired note-taking all work.

Read a Topo Map
Learning goal: Use contour spacing and an interval to interpret relative slope and elevation.
Materials: Topo Lab on screen or its printed lesson; pencil. A real USGS map is optional.
- 5 minIntroduce equal-elevation lines and the map legend.
- 15 minWork through the three practice diagrams.
- 10 minExplain each choice to a partner using labels and spacing.
- 10 minApply the same questions to a real map or complete an exit ticket.
Facilitator notes and answer guidance
1: A is steeper. 2: 160 ft, with a 20 ft interval. 3: the center is higher than 240 ft; the exact elevation is unknown.
Adapt or extend: Read labels aloud and use enlarged prints. Extend: the hill center is below the next unshown 260 ft contour in this idealized complete diagram.

Build a Specimen Story
Learning goal: Support a working explanation with observations and state an uncertainty.
Materials: One safe teaching sample or photograph; the story worksheet or online prompts.
- 3 minContrast an observation with an interpretation.
- 8 minRecord locality, two observations, test status and a working idea.
- 5 minA partner checks whether the idea follows from the evidence.
- 4 minRevise, name one uncertainty and print or save to the local Journal.
Facilitator notes and answer guidance
There is no single correct mineral name. Look for a recorded context, two separate observations, a test or “not tested” note, an evidence-based idea and an open question.
Adapt or extend: Allow dictated answers, labeled drawings or sentence starters. Extend by comparing how a second specimen changes the explanation.
